Us

There’s a bit towards the end of this film where someone says something like “what is this? Is it some sort of performance art stunt?”, which are questions you could put at the film as a whole. There are whole chunks where someone of my limited brain capacity struggles to work out what on earth is going on. But it’s done so elegantly – balletically even – that you flow along with it anyway.

For fans of horror films there’s plenty of “this person’s going to kill me”, “No maybe I can kill them”, “No maybe not” scenes that, to be honest grate on me somewhat, but it all looks so good that you never get bored.

So, what is it all about? Is it about us? Or US – the United States? And what is the significance of the repeated use of mirror images and the number 11?

To be honest, if you want to think through all that (as some reviewers seem to have done), be my guest, but if you’re looking for some sort of 1:1 symbolism, I think you’re missing the point. Judge Art first and foremost by its own rules, and if you do that Us is a perfectly fine film
